The Dry Season: February to October
The dry season is the best time to visit Kumana. As water levels in the villus (natural lakes) drop, wildlife gathers around the remaining water sources, making animals far easier to spot. Leopards, elephants, and herds of deer become more predictable in their movements, and the open landscape gives you clearer sightlines for photography.
If you’re travelling specifically for big game and photography, aim for the heart of the dry season roughly May through September. These months offer the most consistent sightings and comfortable safari conditions.
Bird Watching: The Nesting Season
Kumana is legendary among birdwatchers, and for good reason. The park’s mangrove swamp comes alive during the nesting season, which typically runs from May to July. During these months, thousands of migratory and resident birds — including pelicans, painted storks, herons, and rare species like the black-necked stork — gather to breed. If birdlife is your priority, this is the window you don’t want to miss.
The Wet Season: October to January
Kumana usually closes for part of the wet season (often around September for park maintenance and again during heavy rains), so it’s worth checking current park status before planning a trip in these months. While the landscape is lush and beautiful, heavy rain can make tracks difficult and sightings less reliable.
